Leon's Story

Life used to be normal for Leon. He had what some would consider the perfect life. He graduated college, earned a degree in computer science, kept a stable and financially well off job, and, most of all, he was married. He had met his beloved Fiona at just 20 years old. Leon had sensed a connection between them from the start. Much to his surprise, Fiona seemed to acknowledge this as well and had even been the first to make a move (something he'd come to love most about her). Needless to say, their relationship had blossomed into something perfect and the two had married within a few years. Fiona became a social worker and he became a software engineer. Their life together was perfect. However, Leon would come to find out that not all good things last forever.Suddenly, Fiona had begun to experience trouble breathing and pain in her upper body, as well as significant weight loss. Worst of all, she had coughed up blood. When she had gone to the doctor, she'd be given awful news. Fiona had been diagnosed with stage three lung cancer. Her days were numbered. When Leon heard the news, he had entered a state of shock, unsure of how to react or what to say. Despite the circumstances, Fiona simply smiled and told him, "Let's enjoy the time we have left together."With every month that passed, things seemed to be slowly growing worse and worse. Fiona was weak. Her body was dying. It pained Leon to watch the woman he loved suffer in pain. Although she never said it, he could see that she'd been in pain too. But she was strong. Fiona was always strong.It had come to a point where Leon couldn't bare to see Fiona suffer any longer. He had to put her out of her misery. He had to relieve her of this pain, this agony. So he'd done the unthinkable.One quiet, Autumn night, Leon had decided he was going to stop the pain. He waited until she'd fallen asleep. He whispered to her how much he loved her. How thankful he'd been to have her in his life. "Please forgive me," he'd say. With that, he had taken the pillow on their bed and relieved her of her misery.After she had passed, Leon was overcome with guilt and stress. For a while, he was afraid that they'd figure out the truth. Everyone had assumed it was the cancer, though. Still, this did little to help Leon. Somehow, he had convinced himself that the cancer took her. His mind had blocked out the truth.Soon, however, he'd come to face the truth...
